The Process
3D DESIGN
All designs are developed in a 3D CAD environment before any wood is cut. Building virtual models helps to flesh out ideas and see what works aesthetically and functionally. Proportion, symmetry, shape, details.. they can all be optimized in this space.
WOOD SELECTION
A critical step in the process, proper selection of raw materials can truly enhance a piece, or make it feel disorganized and disconnected. Flat sawn wood, quartersawn wood, grain prominence, color, figure, and wood combinations are all important factors considered when selecting materials.
DIMENSIONING
Wood is purchased rough sawn and oversized so that the final dimensions (length, width, thickness) can be controlled precisely. Wood is dimensioned using the bandsaw, jointer, planer, table saw. This process is typically done in two phases so that wood is allowed to move to its new equilibrium after the first milling phase, it’s then brought to final dimensions.
JOINERY
Joinery methods are chosen based on the strength requirements and the desired visual aesthetic of a piece. There are many joinery options and they all have a utility when used appropriately. Joinery is a vast subset of woodworking and one I thoroughly enjoy expanding my skillset in.
ASSEMBLY
This is the part of the process when blood pressure spikes. Ensuring adequate clamping pressure, getting everything together before the glue begins to set, taping off joints to prevent glue squeeze out.. it’s all part of the experience honey.
DETAILS
Details matter. They round out a piece of furniture, giving it interest and dimension. Edge profiles, grain continuity, texture… subtle but far from invisible.
SANDING, FINISHING AND HARDWARE
Pieces are sanded through a progression of grits and finish applied based on the application. My preference for interior furniture is a hard wax oil to provide durability and protection while maintaining an “in the wood” feel of the finish. After the finish is cured, all hardware such as door pulls, hinges and drawer slides are installed.
